Tianjin Port is an important port of Binhai New Area. The state endows a functional positioning of “an international shipping center and logistics center and becomes a top-class port in north China” to Binhai.
In the recent decade, Tianjin Committee of CCP and Tianjin Municipal Government attaches importance to accelerate the building of Tianjin Port into an international shipping center in north China and the facilities and functions of Tianjin Port have got great improvement. During the 10th Five-year Plan Period, the port throughput was 100 million tons, 200 million tons and 240 million tons respectively in 2001, 2004 and 2005, 3.2 times of that in 1995. The port throughput tops ports in north China. In this period, the yearly average growth of port throughput is 15.5%. Such a development speed is only next to Shenzhen Port among major Chinese ports. With the opening of the 200 000 tonnage deep-water sea-route and the 200 000 tonnage ore berth and the construction of 300 000 tonnage crude oil dock, the port functions and support facilities as highway, railway and air transport are optimizing. The rapid development of Tianjin Port plays a key role in making Tianjin Port an international shipping center and logistics center.
Goods sources, diversified financing and complete facilities are three elements for building Tianjin Port into the international shipping center and international logistics center. Zhou Liqun, head of the School of Economics, Nankai University, told enorth.com that the competition between ports is the competition of the hinterland and good source in fact. Tianjin Port has trade contacts with more than 400 ports in the world and the goods sources include North China and Northwest China, being the nearest port connecting Euro-Asia Continental Bridge. Presently, the logistics of key ports is mainly petroleum, ores, coal and containers. Therefore, Tianjin Port shall do well in goods source exploitation. One is stressing on 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the rapid increasing export-import goods sources; two is grasping the opportunity of the transportation for coal produced in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia and export-import goods sources; third is enlarging and strengthening the goods source of Tianjin itself, especially export-import goods sources; four is giving priority to Shaanxi and Xinjiang among the goods sources provinces and regions in Northwest China.
