Turkmenistan, located in Central Asia, was once an important node on the ancient Silk Road. Today, the "Silk Road Revival" strategy proposed by Turkmenistan is highly consistent with China's initiative to build the "Belt and Road". In recent years, China and Turkmenistan have continuously deepened their pragmatic cooperation in areas such as building the "Belt and Road" and promoting the high-quality development of China-Europe trains, and the prospects for railway cooperation between the two countries are broad. In June this year, the "Memorandum of Understanding between China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. and the Railway Department of the Transport and Communications Department of the Cabinet of Turkmenistan" was signed. The cooperation between the two countries in the field of transportation represented by railways is expected to achieve more results, which is of great significance to further strengthen bilateral economic and trade ties, develop international railway transport corridors passing through China and Turkmenistan, enhance the level of Asia-Europe railway connectivity, and carry out international railway freight transport cooperation between the two countries and transiting through the two countries to third countries.
According to the reporter, Turkmenistan is actively promoting the construction of a railway system for cross-border transportation, aiming to make Turkmenistan a large "transit hub" in the Eurasian transportation system. At present, the total length of railways in Turkmenistan exceeds 5,000 kilometers, and there are more than 700 railway bridges, which has basically formed a railway transportation pattern that connects east and west and north and south. Turkmenistan has railway docking stations with its neighboring countries Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Kazakhstan. It is worth mentioning that the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway was opened in 2014. This railway line not only strengthens Turkmenistan's ties with other countries, but also provides new opportunities for its economic development and international cooperation.
China and Turkmenistan are both members of the Railway Cooperation Organization. They have maintained a good cooperative relationship under the framework of the multilateral platform and have achieved fruitful results. In the field of cross-border railway infrastructure cooperation, Chinese-made locomotives, passenger cars and other railway equipment account for more than 80% of the market share in Turkmenistan, and undertake more than 90% of Turkmenistan's railway transportation capacity. The memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in June has provided a more realistic policy basis for opening up new transportation channels, which will further smooth the railway transportation channel between China and Europe and promote mutually beneficial and win-win development. It is reported that Turkmenistan attaches great importance to the railway transportation cooperation between China and Turkmenistan, and actively supports the development of international railway freight transportation from China to Turkmenistan and from Turkmenistan to Europe through Turkmenistan, especially container transportation.
Transportation infrastructure can not only promote economic and social development along the route, but also enhance regional connectivity and have a significant impact on the geopolitical and economic landscape. China-Turkey railway cooperation can further smooth the railway transport channel between China and Europe and promote mutually beneficial and win-win development.
